Federal Income Tax

Form 1040, Explained Line by Line

Form 1040 is two pages that decide your entire tax bill. Once you understand its skeleton, every tax software screen and IRS letter suddenly makes sense.

The skeleton of Form 1040

Page 1 collects who you are: filing status, dependents, and every source of income. Page 2 does the math: deduction, taxable income, tax, credits, payments, and finally your refund or balance due.

Everything else — schedules, worksheets, supporting forms — just feeds numbers into specific 1040 lines.

Filing status and dependents (top of page 1)

Your filing status sets your bracket and standard deduction. Dependents drive the Child Tax Credit and the Credit for Other Dependents. Wrong information here is the #1 source of IRS notices.

Income lines 1a–9

Wages from W-2s, interest, dividends, IRA and pension distributions, Social Security, capital gains, and "other income" from Schedule 1. The sum is your total income on line 9.

From AGI to taxable income

Line 10 subtracts adjustments (Schedule 1 Part II) to give AGI. Line 12 subtracts the standard or itemized deduction. Line 13 takes the QBI deduction. Line 15 is your taxable income — the number your brackets apply to.

Tax, credits, and other taxes

Line 16 is the tax from the brackets. Lines 19–21 subtract nonrefundable credits. Line 23 adds "other taxes" (Schedule 2: SE tax, additional Medicare, NIIT). Line 24 is your total tax.

Payments and the final number

Lines 25–33 add what you already paid: withholding, estimated payments, EITC, additional CTC. If payments exceed tax, line 34 is your refund. Otherwise line 37 is what you owe by April 15.

Common schedules you'll meet
