Does the US have VAT?
No. The US uses state and local sales tax instead. VAT is common in Europe, the UK, Canada (as GST/HST), and most of the world.
How is VAT different from sales tax?
VAT is collected at each step of production based on the value added; sales tax is charged once at the final consumer sale. For the buyer, the math is similar.
What rate should I use?
Common rates: UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Canada GST 5% (plus provincial). Verify the current rate before using.
